Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor to strengthen multi-agent development capabilities

Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup that enables developers to run multiple artificial intelligence (AI) agents simultaneously, as the technology giant expands its presence in AI-powered software development. The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Founded in 2024 by Charlie Holtz and Jackson de Campos, Conductor developed a platform that allows developers to coordinate multiple AI coding agents, each operating in an independent workspace, to work on different parts of a software project simultaneously.

The platform integrates models from AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, rather than relying on its own proprietary models. It enables developers to manage parallel coding tasks across cloud environments, personal computers and mobile devices.

Conductor's founder and Chief Executive Officer Charlie Holtz announced the acquisition, confirming that the company would be joining Meta.

"I am very excited to share that Conductor is joining Meta! "We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface. If you liked Conductor, you’re gonna love what’s coming.

He also thanked the company's early investors and users for their support and feedback.

The acquisition adds to Meta's efforts to strengthen its AI coding capabilities. In August, the company launched Muse Code, its own coding agent designed to work with large-scale codebases. The latest deal could extend these capabilities into multi-agent orchestration, allowing developers to coordinate several AI agents within a single development environment.

Meta has not disclosed how it plans to integrate Conductor's technology into its existing AI products or whether the platform will be relaunched under its ecosystem.

Conductor begins winding down its services

Following the acquisition, Conductor has started winding down its existing services. The company has stopped accepting new sign-ups and app downloads, while existing paying users have been allowed to continue using the platform at no additional cost.

Conductor Cloud is scheduled to switch to read-only mode on November 13 and shut down on November 20. Users have been advised to migrate their workspaces and conversation histories to a local environment or download their data before the cloud service closes.

The locally hosted version will continue receiving support for new AI models and major bug fixes into early 2027.

Holtz indicated that the company has plans for a new service in the coming year, although further details have not been announced.

AI companies intensify competition for developer tools

Meta's acquisition comes amid growing competition among major AI companies to secure a stronger position in the software development ecosystem.

On the same day, OpenAI also announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer, a developer-tools startup focused on storing and managing AI-generated code. The development follows OpenAI's earlier announcement in June about its planned acquisition of Ona, a company working on cloud-based coding environments and AI agent orchestration.

While Conductor focuses on coordinating multiple coding agents working in parallel, these acquisitions reflect the broader push to build development environments around increasingly autonomous AI systems.

The competition is also unfolding alongside rising investment requirements across the AI industry. Recently, Blackstone President Jon Gray highlighted the growing demand for computing infrastructure, data centres and energy to support AI expansion.

He also cited potential equity fundraising by major technology companies, including Meta, Google and Oracle, as part of the financing activity needed to support the industry's next phase of growth.

The growing investment in AI infrastructure and development tools highlights how competition is extending beyond building more capable models. Companies are also seeking to control the platforms, tools and environments through which developers and businesses interact with AI.

For Meta, bringing Conductor's technology and team into its ecosystem could strengthen its position in this evolving market.

However, the company's integration plans remain undisclosed, while the closure of Conductor's cloud service leaves existing users with a transition to manage.
