Bank Islam names former Ryt Bank CEO Melvin Ooi as technology and transformation chief

Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd has appointed former Ryt Bank chief executive officer (CEO) Melvin Ooi as its group chief technology and transformation officer, as the Islamic bank steps up efforts to modernise its technology capabilities and customer experience.

Ooi previously served as CEO of Ryt Bank, where he was involved in establishing and developing one of Malaysia’s newest digital banking platforms.

Bank Islam CEO Raja Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz said the bank’s technology transformation agenda is focused on translating technology investments into simpler customer journeys, improved service, stronger execution and a more responsive organisation.

“Melvin’s appointment strengthens the leadership and execution capabilities supporting this agenda,” she said in a statement.

She added that Ooi’s experience across digital banking, payments and technology-driven businesses complements Bank Islam’s existing capabilities as it modernises its platforms, enhances customer experiences and builds a future-ready organisation.

The bank will focus on applying technology responsibly while maintaining its emphasis on trust, resilience and Shariah principles, Raja Teh said.

“Through responsible innovation and operational excellence, we remain focused on creating long-term value for customers, communities and stakeholders,” she added.

Ooi brings more than 24 years of leadership experience across digital banking, fintech, payments, customer loyalty and financial services in Asia and Australia.

Before joining Bank Islam, he held senior roles at BonusKad Loyalty, Alipay, American Express and Maybank, where he worked on digital transformation, payments innovation, customer growth and strategic partnerships.

In his new role, Ooi will oversee the execution of Bank Islam’s enterprise-wide technology and transformation agenda.

He said his priorities will include modernising the bank’s technology capabilities, strengthening the use of data and improving customer experiences.

“My focus will be on working closely with colleagues across the organisation to modernise technology capabilities, strengthen the use of data, improve customer experiences and support the delivery of meaningful outcomes for our customers and stakeholders,” Ooi said.

He added that successful transformation requires disciplined execution, collaboration and a focus on creating value for customers and stakeholders.
