Singapore deepens AI push with OpenAI, Google partnerships

Singapore has signed separate artificial intelligence agreements with OpenAI and Google, reinforcing the city-state’s ambitions to become a leading global AI hub focused on public services, healthcare, education and enterprise innovation, as mentioned by CNBC.

Under the agreements, OpenAI will invest more than 300 million Singapore dollars (£173 million/$234 million) into strengthening Singapore’s AI ecosystem, while Google will expand collaborations focused on workforce development, healthcare innovation and secure AI deployment.

OpenAI expansion

A key part of the agreement is the launch of the “OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab”, the company’s first such lab established outside the United States. The move follows OpenAI opening its Singapore office in 2024 to support customers and partners across the Asia-Pacific region.

The new lab is expected to create more than 200 jobs over the coming years and will focus on helping local partners deploy frontier AI technologies across sectors including education, finance, healthcare, digital infrastructure and public services.

The initiative will also include training programmes for mid-career engineers, AI startup accelerators and citizen-focused AI applications as part of broader “AI for All” efforts.

Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information and OpenAI said in a joint statement that the investment aims to strengthen long-term AI capabilities in the country.

Google collaboration

Google’s new National AI Partnership with Singapore will centre on solving societal challenges, supporting enterprise innovation and developing an AI-ready workforce.

The company plans to train government researchers to use agentic AI tools in scientific research, while also partnering with Singapore’s Ministry of Education to train educators in AI adoption.

Healthcare will be another major focus area. Google said it will explore collaborations under its “global AI co-clinician research initiative,” examining how AI can support doctors and assist patients through AI agents and intelligent systems.

The tech giant also released a joint whitepaper with the Singapore government focused on the safe deployment of AI agents. The paper follows the launch of Singapore’s AI Agents Sandbox in August 2025.

The latest agreement builds on an earlier AI collaboration signed between Singapore and Google in 2022. Google also expanded its regional AI footprint last year by opening a Google DeepMind research laboratory in Singapore.

Global AI race

Singapore has increasingly positioned itself as a neutral, innovation-friendly and talent-rich destination for AI development and deployment.

The country has already committed more than 1 billion Singapore dollars towards strengthening public AI research capabilities between 2025 and 2030 as part of its broader national AI strategy.

The city-state has also attracted major investments from global technology players including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, OpenAI and Google DeepMind, as competition intensifies globally to dominate the next phase of AI innovation.

With the latest agreements, Singapore is further cementing its role as a strategic gateway for AI deployment across Asia, combining government support, international partnerships and commercial investment to accelerate adoption across both public and private sectors.
