Philippines' DOLE expands industry partnerships to boost jobs and workforce competitiveness

The Philippines' Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is strengthening partnerships with industry and international organisations to expand job opportunities, develop future-ready skills and improve Filipino workers' competitiveness in the global labour market.

As part of these efforts, DOLE has partnered with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (HHI) and the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) to establish a Training Center for Eco-Friendly Shipbuilding Specialists in the Philippines.

The centre is expected to support workforce upskilling and create green job opportunities in the country's shipbuilding industry as demand grows for more sustainable maritime technologies.

Focus on digital and technical skills

DOLE has also partnered with the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) through the JobStart Philippines Programme to improve youth employability in the IT-BPM sector.

JobStart provides participants with core and soft skills training, industry-specific technical training and internships aligned with labour market requirements.

A contact centre representative interviewed by DOLE said international partnerships were helping workers develop digital skills and adapt to new technologies, systems and working methods used globally.

The representative said these opportunities could help workers remain adaptable and competitive as the information technology and call centre industries continue to evolve.

DOLE and PEZA strengthen data-sharing

Separately, DOLE has strengthened its collaboration with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) through a Data Sharing Agreement aimed at improving the processing of foreign employment permits and PEZA visas.

The agreement is intended to support the government's "green line initiative" by expediting government processes involving foreign workers.

DOLE said its partnerships with industry and other government agencies are aimed at enhancing employability, strengthening industry linkages and supporting innovation while preparing Filipino workers for changing labour market demands.
