Cisco to lay off 471 employees across Bay Area offices effective July 13

Cisco Systems will lay off 471 employees across its Bay Area offices, according to new Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings submitted to the state of California. The job cuts, scheduled to take effect on 13 July, span three locations in San Jose, Milpitas and San Francisco.

The filings, first reported by the San Francisco Business Times, position Cisco among the largest employers announcing workforce reductions in the latest round of Bay Area WARN notices.

Three offices to be affected

According to the WARN filings, the planned layoffs will be distributed across Cisco's California offices as follows:

  • 236 employees at 170 West Tasman Drive, San Jose
  • 154 employees at 560 McCarthy Boulevard, Milpitas
  • 81 employees at 500 Terry A. Francois Boulevard, San Francisco

All 471 layoffs are scheduled to become effective on 13 July, according to the state filings.

Neither the WARN notices nor the report disclosed the business functions or employee roles affected by the restructuring.

Latest workforce changes emerge through WARN filings

The disclosures form part of a broader set of WARN filings published in California, where several technology, gaming and biotechnology companies have also reported workforce reductions.

Among the companies listed alongside Cisco were Bill Operations, Elastic, Keywords International Limited Group and Sangamo Therapeutics, each announcing separate layoffs across the Bay Area.

Cisco's filings, however, represent the largest single workforce reduction reported in the latest batch.

California law requires advance notice

California's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers meeting certain thresholds to provide advance notice before implementing qualifying mass layoffs or site closures.

The filings offer an early indication of planned workforce reductions before they take effect, although they do not necessarily include the reasons behind individual restructuring decisions.

Cisco has not publicly outlined the rationale behind the latest Bay Area job cuts in the information available through the WARN filings.
