The Prime Minister said education should develop well-rounded individuals rather than measure intelligence solely through knowledge.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology to be integrated into education without compromising students’ moral values, character development and humanity.

Anwar said AI could expand access to knowledge and enhance intelligence but could not replace the human qualities that education must nurture.

“We are moving in that direction (the use of technology), but there is a caveat, we must reach for the skies while remaining rooted to the earth. Why? Because while AI is important, it also presents certain issues,” he said.

“AI possesses knowledge, but it lacks humanity and moral depth. It has no values, no character, and no humanity. It is merely intelligence,” he added.

Anwar made the remarks in response to a student's question about whether all schools in Malaysia could eventually adopt technologies such as tablets, laptops and AI.

Earlier that day, the Prime Minister met and interacted with students from schools in Pasir Gudang and Pontian, Johor, at the Parliament building.

He said Malaysia was moving towards greater technology integration in education, but emphasised that the transition must be accompanied by an understanding of technology's limitations and the need to preserve human values.

“Technology important? Yes, it is. A lack of intelligence is dangerous, but if we focus solely on intelligence, human values are lost,” Anwar said.

“Therefore, as we move in that direction (the use of technology), we must remain mindful of how we can continue to stay truly human,” he added.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the Malay cultural concept of “akal budi”, which connects intellect with moral character and ethical conduct. He said education should develop well-rounded individuals rather than measure intelligence solely through knowledge.

As schools explore greater use of AI and digital tools, his remarks underscore the importance of ensuring that technological advancement is accompanied by students’ social and moral development.

Anwar also encouraged students to express appreciation and affection towards their parents, describing everyday gestures as an important way to nurture empathy, love and humanity.

His remarks placed the emphasis on maintaining human relationships and ethical values alongside the growing role of technology in education and society.
