DBS has appointed Kelvin Wong as its new Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO), effective May 11, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to advancing sustainability and supporting Asia’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Wong succeeds Helge Muenkel, who will step down from the role as he relocates overseas. The leadership change comes as financial institutions across the region accelerate efforts to align capital flows with climate goals and sustainable development priorities.

A veteran banker with more than two decades of experience in energy, policy regulation and financing, Wong joined DBS in 2016. He currently serves as Managing Director and Head of Energy, Renewables and Infrastructure in the Institutional Banking Group, where he has played a pivotal role in supporting large-scale infrastructure and clean energy projects.

Prior to DBS, Wong held senior roles in specialised finance, including project, acquisition and leveraged finance, as well as mergers and acquisitions, at Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Standard Chartered. He also served at the Energy Market Authority, Singapore’s national energy regulator.

Announcing the appointment, Tan Su Shan underscored the strategic importance of sustainability to the bank’s long-term vision.

“At DBS, our conviction is that sustainability is a core driver of long-term value. When approached pragmatically, it strengthens competitiveness, improves lives and builds resilience for the future,” she said. “With over 20 years of experience in energy, policy regulation and financing, Kelvin is well placed to advance DBS’ sustainability agenda with our clients and communities.”

She also expressed gratitude to Muenkel for his contributions to DBS’ sustainability journey.

Wong’s appointment comes at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, which has underscored the importance of resilient and sustainable energy systems that are affordable, diversified and secure. His leadership is expected to further strengthen DBS’ role in financing Asia’s energy transition and sustainable growth.

An alumnus of the National University of Singapore, Wong holds an honours degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Arcadia University. He is also a member of the International Energy Agency Finance Industry Advisory Board and has served as a peer reviewer of the agency’s Southeast Asia Energy Outlook since 2021.
