Growing mismatch between career expectations and workplace realities, warns Malaysian Medical Association

The biggest challenge today is the disconnect between what students expect from careers and the realities they will face, and authentic career insights could prevent costly missteps later.

Many students are choosing careers based on perception rather than a clear understanding of workplace realities, creating a growing gap between expectations and professional life, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has warned.

In response, the MMA is hosting its third Career Guidance Conference this weekend at M World Hotel in Petaling Jaya, aiming to help secondary school students and their parents make more informed decisions about future career paths. The free programme is open to students aged 15 to 19.

MMA president Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo said the biggest challenge today is the disconnect between what students expect from careers and the realities they will face.

"This conference is designed to bridge that gap by allowing students and parents to hear directly from professionals about what these careers truly involve, the challenges, responsibilities, and long-term pathways," he said.

Dr Thirunavukarasu stressed that early exposure to authentic career insights could prevent costly missteps later. He described career selection as a major life decision requiring accurate information and direct engagement with professionals.

Organising chairman Dr Sivabala Selvaratnam added that many students rely heavily on online information or advice from family and friends, which may not provide a complete picture. Parents, she said, remain a key influence in guiding career choices.

"This platform allows families to learn together. By understanding academic requirements and workplace realities, parents can better support their children in making well-informed decisions," Dr Sivabala said.

The two-day conference will include talks and interactive Q&A sessions with professionals, alongside participation from universities and colleges outlining academic pathways.

Participating organisations include the National Union of Journalists Malaysia, Malaysian Dental Association, Malaysian Institute of Accountants, National Union of the Teaching Profession, Malaysia Airlines Pilots Association, Malaysian Pharmacists Society, Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Malaysian Institution of Architects, and the Data Science Association. The initiative forms part of MMA’s annual programme focusing on education and youth development.
