Altman and former OpenAI president to lead advanced AI research team at Microsoft

In breaking news, Microsoft hires former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman. Altman's departure from OpenAI, prompted by the board's loss of confidence in his leadership, led to a weekend of negotiations.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced on X that both Altman and Brockman will now contribute to Microsoft's cutting-edge AI research team.

“We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team,” says Nadella. “We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.”

Nadella, whose company has invested over $10 billion in OpenAI and acquired almost 50% ownership, said Microsoft remains committed to the AI startup. Microsoft was reportedly surprised by OpenAI's sudden board action. It is notable that Nadella managed to convince and find a new home at Microsoft for the former OpenAI leaders before the market opened on Monday.

The OpenAI board removed Altman, saying he had not been "consistently candid" in conversations with them, but did not provide details for the reasoning. This angered many OpenAI employees.
