Microsoft's Xbox restructuring triggers another round of gaming job cuts

Independent game developer Double Fine has laid off 23 employees weeks after Microsoft's Xbox restructuring, citing the need to resize its operations following its transition out of the tech giant.
Double Fine Productions has laid off 23 employees, marking another workforce reduction linked to Microsoft's Xbox restructuring earlier this month. The independent game studio said the decision was necessary to ensure its long-term survival after regaining its independence following Microsoft's wider reorganisation of its gaming business.
The announcement comes weeks after Microsoft cut thousands of jobs across its gaming division as part of a broader corporate restructuring. Several Xbox-affiliated studios were either sold, shut down or spun out as independent companies during the process.
Studio cites survival after returning to independence
In a statement posted on Bluesky, Double Fine confirmed the reduction in headcount and described the move as one taken to create a sustainable business following its transition to an independent studio.
The company said: "Today, Double Fine Productions let go of 23 members of our staff." It added: "As a small, tightly-knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action. Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain."
According to reports covering the restructuring, the studio employed roughly 90 people before the layoffs, meaning more than a quarter of its workforce has now been affected.

Employees recognised for their contribution
Double Fine said every departing employee had played an important role in shaping the studio and its games.
"The people we are losing were all important. They all made an impact on our games and culture, and they will be missed."
The studio also said it would support affected employees during the transition.
"We are committed to supporting each affected person as best as we can, and we thank them for their hard work and commitment to the creative spirit we cherish here at Double Fine."
The statement was signed by Tim, referring to studio founder Tim Schafer.
Latest consequence of Microsoft's gaming overhaul
The layoffs represent another consequence of Microsoft's large-scale restructuring of its Xbox business, which took effect earlier this month.
According to reports, Microsoft's overhaul resulted in:
- Thousands of job cuts across Xbox and gaming operations
- Multiple studios being affected by the restructuring
- Several development teams becoming independent after separating from Microsoft
- Double Fine returning to independent ownership before announcing its own workforce reduction
Unlike Microsoft's broader restructuring, Double Fine said its decision was directly tied to the realities of operating independently and resizing the business to match available resources.
Acclaimed studio faces a smaller future
Founded more than 26 years ago, Double Fine has built a reputation for narrative-driven and original games.
Its portfolio includes:
- Psychonauts
- Psychonauts 2
- Grim Fandango Remastered
- Costume Quest
The studio has become known for producing distinctive, creatively driven titles, making the latest workforce reduction another significant moment in a challenging period for the games industry.
Industry continues to navigate uncertainty
Double Fine's announcement adds to a growing list of workforce reductions across the global gaming sector, where studios continue to adjust to changing market conditions and higher development costs.
While the company indicated the remaining team will continue operating as an independent studio, its latest move highlights how Microsoft's Xbox restructuring continues to have lasting effects beyond the initial round of layoffs, with former partner studios now reshaping their own organisations to remain sustainable.
