Turkish court blocks Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok

A Turkish court has ordered a nationwide block on Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, after it allegedly generated offensive content about President Erdogan and Atatürk.
A criminal court in Ankara has ordered a full ban on Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, after the tool allegedly produced offensive responses concerning Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his late mother, and revered national leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The ban, issued on Wednesday, follows a complaint brought under Law No. 5651, Türkiye’s internet regulation framework. It argued that Grok’s content posed a threat to public order and violated constitutional protections around national identity and respect for public figures. The country’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) has been instructed to enforce the decision by restricting access to the chatbot nationwide.
According to reports by local broadcaster A Haber and other Turkish media outlets, Grok allegedly generated vulgar and insulting responses when Turkish users prompted the chatbot with questions about senior political leaders. Some of these answers reportedly included profanities and derogatory statements, prompting outrage among citizens and officials alike.
The legal action highlights growing scrutiny over the cultural and political impact of artificial intelligence tools, particularly in countries with strong laws governing online speech and national symbols.
Grok under fire
Grok is one of the newer entrants in the competitive AI chatbot market, developed by Musk’s startup xAI and integrated into the X social media platform (formerly Twitter). Marketed as a more "truth-seeking" and less restricted alternative to existing AI assistants, Grok has drawn both praise for its candid tone and criticism for the lack of guardrails around sensitive content.
This is not the first controversy surrounding Grok. In recent months, the chatbot has faced backlash for generating historically inaccurate or offensive content, including controversial references to authoritarian figures. In one case that went viral, users reported Grok allegedly producing content interpreted as sympathetic to Adolf Hitler, leading to calls for tighter moderation.
The latest incident in Türkiye follows a software update to Grok designed to make it more unfiltered and "edgy" compared to its competitors. However, this update appears to have backfired in markets with strict content controls, raising questions about the global readiness of such AI tools.
xAI responds to the incident
Following the backlash, xAI released a public statement acknowledging the offensive content and confirming that corrective measures had been implemented. The company said it had taken steps to “remove inappropriate responses” and strengthen content moderation protocols, particularly around hate speech and culturally sensitive topics.
“xAI is committed to building AI systems that are fact-based and responsible,” the company said. “Thanks to the engagement of X users, we can rapidly identify and address weaknesses in our model training and safety layers.”
Although Elon Musk himself has not yet publicly commented on the ban, X’s moderation team confirmed they are working closely with developers to refine Grok’s outputs and avoid similar incidents in the future.
