Independent probe launched at Law Society of Singapore amid workplace bullying claims

An independent investigation is under way at the Law Society of Singapore following bullying allegations, staff resignations and governance concerns.
The Law Society of Singapore has commissioned an independent investigation into allegations of workplace bullying and misconduct following an anonymous online post that surfaced in September 2025, according to media reports. The probe comes amid a period of organisational turbulence marked by high staff turnover and leadership instability.
The Straits Times reported that nearly a third of the organisation’s more than 70 full-time employees resigned during 2025. Among the departures were a chief executive officer who exited less than four months into the role and a long-serving senior executive, whose resignation reportedly triggered further exits. At one stage, the human resources function was left without staff.
The investigation, commissioned by the Law Society’s audit committee, is being conducted by TSMP Law Corporation. Its joint managing partner, Senior Counsel Thio Shen Yi, confirmed that a progress report has been submitted but declined to share further details. Current and former employees were interviewed between October and December, with several requesting anonymity due to fears of reprisal.
According to accounts cited by The Straits Times, employees described a work environment marked by excessive demands, including expectations to remain available around the clock and to perform duties outside their formal roles. Some also alleged being spoken to in a condescending manner in front of colleagues and feeling pressured by fears of dismissal.
The probe has reportedly also examined concerns related to expense claims during overseas trips and the handling of a sexual harassment allegation. Under existing protocols, expenses below S$50,000 do not require council approval, a point that has drawn scrutiny from some council members.
The developments unfold against a backdrop of internal tensions within the Law Society, following leadership changes and disputes over governance norms. Observers note that the outcome of the investigation could carry implications for trust, employee wellbeing and institutional accountability within professional bodies.
