Dentsu India has appointed Ajay Gupte as Chief Operating Officer, South Asia, strengthening its leadership team as the advertising network advances its integrated business model across media, creative, data and technology.

The appointment brings more than two decades of industry experience to Dentsu's regional operations at a time when advertising and marketing services companies are adapting to rapid shifts driven by digital platforms, artificial intelligence and changing consumer behaviour.

Focus turns to operational integration

In his new role, Gupte will oversee initiatives aimed at improving operational alignment across Dentsu's businesses while strengthening client relationships and encouraging closer collaboration between teams.

According to the company, his appointment supports its strategy of delivering integrated solutions by bringing together capabilities across media, creative, data and technology.

The role will also focus on enhancing operational efficiency as clients increasingly seek connected marketing services rather than standalone agency offerings.

Industry veteran joins from WPP Media

Before joining Dentsu India, Gupte served as President, Client Solutions at WPP Media.

His earlier leadership experience includes serving as Chief Executive Officer, South Asia at Wavemaker, where he worked on business expansion, client strategy and organisational development.

Over the course of his career, Gupte has built experience across multiple disciplines, including:

  • Media planning
  • Brand strategy and solutions
  • Business transformation
  • Client relationship management
  • Leadership of large, cross-functional teams
  • Strategic partnership development

His professional experience spans both Indian and international markets, giving him exposure to diverse industries and evolving marketing environments.

AI and technology reshape agency priorities

Commenting on his appointment, Gupte said organisations must combine creativity, technology and data-led thinking to create stronger outcomes for clients as the media landscape continues to evolve.

His appointment comes as advertising networks continue to redesign operating models in response to growing adoption of artificial intelligence, increased digital media consumption and changing customer expectations.

The sector has also seen greater emphasis on integrating technology consulting, analytics and creative capabilities into unified client offerings.

Leadership move aligns with long-term growth plans

Dentsu India said Gupte's appointment supports its continued focus on operational excellence, innovation and integrated growth across South Asia.

As marketing services companies compete to deliver end-to-end business solutions, leadership appointments with experience across media, transformation and technology are becoming increasingly important. Gupte's operational and client management background is expected to support Dentsu's efforts to strengthen collaboration across its businesses while responding to the evolving needs of brands in the AI-driven marketing landscape.
