Philippines' DOLE steps up workplace safety inspections at construction sites

The inspections are designed to help employers and workers identify and address potential safety gaps before they result in workplace accidents
The Philippines' Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has intensified workplace safety inspections across construction sites in La Union as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with labor laws and occupational safety standards in one of the country's highest-risk industries.
The high-impact, high-visibility inspection (HIHVI) program was carried out from June 16 to 19 in San Fernando City and the municipalities of San Juan and Bacnotan, targeting construction sites to ensure adherence to occupational safety and health (OSH) regulations and general labor standards.
According to DOLE, the initiative is aimed at preventing workplace accidents, protecting workers' rights and promoting safe, decent and productive workplaces while supporting the country's growing infrastructure and construction sector.
During the inspections, labor inspectors assessed workplace conditions, emergency preparedness measures, accident prevention programs and site safety management systems. They also checked the availability and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety signage and employers' implementation of workplace safety policies.
Beyond monitoring compliance, the inspections were designed to help employers and workers identify and address potential safety gaps before they result in workplace accidents, injuries or operational disruptions.
DOLE Ilocos Regional Director Honorina Dian-Baga said the inspection program reflects the agency's broader commitment to strengthening workplace safety across the region.
"Through the high-impact, high-visibility inspection, we aim not only to enforce compliance but also to strengthen our shared responsibility in ensuring that workers are protected and that workplaces remain safe and productive," Baga said.
She added that sustained compliance with labor and occupational safety regulations benefits both workers and businesses by improving productivity, strengthening business performance and enhancing public confidence in the construction sector.
DOLE urged employers to continue complying with labor standards and workplace safety requirements, stressing that protecting workers is a shared responsibility among government, employers and employees.
The agency said it will continue conducting regular inspections and compliance assistance programs to foster a nationwide culture of prevention and accountability, ensuring Filipino workers have safe and healthy workplaces while supporting the country's development goals.
