Thailand announces two-day holiday for civil servants amid Bangkok flooding

Thailand grants civil servants in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces a two-day special holiday as flooding disrupts travel and workplace access.
Thailand has approved special holidays for civil servants in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces on September 28 and 29 as heavy rainfall and flooding disrupt travel across the region. The move is intended to reduce commuter movement and ease pressure on transport networks, according to Reuters.
The government said the two-day break applies to civil servants, while essential official work scheduled during the period may continue at the discretion of department heads.
Employee travel disruption
The decision effectively provides public-sector employees in the affected areas with two additional days away from regular office duties, while allowing government departments to maintain critical operations where required.
Floodwater began receding on Sunday as rainfall eased, although some residents remained stranded in their homes.
Business continuity
The government's approach combines employee travel relief with provisions for continuity of essential public services. Department heads have discretion to determine whether important official business should proceed during the holidays.
For employers, the development highlights how severe weather events can affect workforce availability, commuting and business continuity. Government-led measures such as temporary holidays can also form part of a broader response to protect employees when transport infrastructure and access to workplaces are disrupted.
The special holidays are limited to civil servants in Bangkok and the three surrounding provinces covered by the government order. Private-sector employers are not covered by the announcement.
